A reader pointed out a road sign for an Eastern North Carolina town that seems to be missing a letter. We found the truth. It's not a particularly deep truth, but we found it anyway.
I grew up in Portsmouth, VA and there was a Harrell family next door that had come from NE NC and had many relatives there. Areas around Edenton, and Chowan and Perquimans county. Later I met another person with the Harrell name unrelated to my childhood friends, and they also had family in that area. Apparently families with the Harrell name have lived there since colonial days.
Thanks for your article about the S, or was it a missing ‘S? Anyway reading it made me recall Helltown Road which, according to Google Maps, is a mere 17 miles or so distant. Helltown Road departs Garland and terminates near Old Fayetteville Road. No idea what sort of statement that makes about road names, Garland or the proximity of churches and/or Christian academies.
I feel for the intern. I once as a student intern made the same mistake when putting an image of Greenville sc into a presentation on Greenville nc. Fortunately, my supervisor was actually doing his job, and corrected the mistake before we delivered the presentation. Beware of supervisors who blame interns for errors!
Also made me think about the way we call Belk Department Store “Belk’s”.
“Spoiler Alert: Other States Exist And They Also Have Towns In Them” I laughed at this for a very long time.
And, is it Banner Elk OR Banner's Elk?
Seems like NC was anti-possessive when it came to place names for a very long time!
The story I've heard is a local by the last name "Banner" shot an elk, thus, Banner's Elk.
Over the years, and with the influx of "outsiders," it became shortened to Banner.
Anyway, you got to appreciate NC geography and history.
OK, the round towns rabbit hole from the Rabbit Hole was enjoyable, but now I feel a bit disoriented.

The “Christian Academy” was established due to Brown v. Board.

Is it a state raod or pvt road(blue) because pvt roads are named by the builder

DOT does not use apostrophes on road signs.
