This week, the Rabbit Hole answers a question about the color of Charlotte's skyline, discovers a hidden Art Deco department store, and relays some hard news about the Elevator Queen.
Two comments . . . If Duke Energy’s cost for 45000+ lights is only $3/hr., why is my power bill so high (?), and I expected the “Hand of God” to be Pele!
Well Jeremy, you do keep sending me down some North Carolina Rabbit Holes. When I was kid (some years, well decades ago in the 20th century), my uncle who was a small businessman in downtown Greensboro used to take me to lunch in the cafeteria in the pictured Belk's. Pretty classy place then. I always got shrimp cocktail and prime roast beef with potatoes. He lived until age 94 after he retired at 89. I vividly recall placing his obituary in the now decrepit News-Record building. Not much looks the same on Elm Street now, people don’t even seem to know what “Hamburger Square” was, despite a historical marker.
Thanks again, Jeremy for making the memories return.
