There are people in Carteret Country that would argue with you about the existence of a Black Panther in North Carolina - One would be Butch Cannon from Morehead City - He was raised on the North River and told me he has seen Black Panthers

Can you please do a follow up on the new slogan the Panthers are trying out “defend the lair”? I’m pretty sure panthers would live in dens.

I remember that sound from the Mercury Cougar ads in the 1970s and '80s. The ads always ended with a live cougar sitting on top of a Ford/Mercury/Lincoln sign. When the Panthers started using that sound effect, those commercials immediately came to mind for me.

I think both the Pittsburgh Panthers and Ohio Bobcats use the same sound, but I don't know if their use pre-dates the Carolina Panthers

I'd just like to say that until this article, I had never, NEVER, connected the name and logo of the team with the concept of the Black Panthers organization. Now, I cannot unsee it...thanks, John Wiebusch.

Did Richardson ever consider Carolina Cougars, after the ABA franchise?

Here via another Substack because I had a feeling I knew where you were going but Ireland’s comments threw me for a loop and she doesn’t know what she’s taking about. “She also says she doesn’t understand the whole “panther isn’t a real animal” thing...” - my thoughts exactly. Panther is a common name, as you’ve stated, and regionally it changes from panther to cougar to mountain lion, and puma is much more common in South America. All refer to the same species or subspecies of animal. But what everyone is correct about is there is not a “black” panther. But panthers as a species *do exist*. I’ve seen four Florida panthers, my husband 7.

I believe the Florida Panthers hockey team uses the same "panther" sound effect when they score a goal.
