North Wilkesboro Speedway is getting racing back, a quarter century after its last major race. Why did it sit empty for so long? And how did it finally reopen?
This makes me very happy, and I'm not even a huge NASCAR fan. I am, however, a fan of nostalgia, and NWS is a prime example of how something nostalgic can be requitted. I love that they're gonna keep it shabby-ish!
In 1966, three of my buddies and I, while stationed at the Winston-Salem Air Force Station, bought a 1956 Divco milk truck. We painted it red, yellow and blue. It was the biggest beer cooler we could find. We were all big NASCAR Cup fans and wanted a vehicle to use for the Cup races. The first race we took the truck to was North Wilkesboro Speedway. We even had it in the infield. We had some great times at NWS.
We've driven by dozens of times visiting our kids at ASU. I got excited when Jr started talking up the iRacing scan but didn't think it would turn into a revival. Man I hope this works out for Wilkesboro and all parties.
What a great story, I can’t wait to see the track open back up. This will help our town and County bring back money , it will be a Blessing to see that track open. I went to evèr race I could. I had a Restaurant at that time , Captain Table of North Wilkesboro. I had a lot of fans and some drivers and some of the teams to eat with us . We had most all the Winston posters of the Drivers . Had them framed . Still have a lot of them . Some were autographed . I lost my restaurant in 2005 to a electric fire, I was up dating the heating system’s . Some of the old wires did not get unhooked. The SBI Agent came in and showed where it started. I had a home over the restaurant. But that was a very sad day. Bought it in 1979. My husband Paul was great friends with a lot of the drivers , he passed away.he always took care of the front and I was always cooking and loved it.Did not check the insurance after Paul left . So I did not have the money to put it back. My son Eddie has a restaurant in Millers creek and he cook just like I did , and he has a lot more. He has the Winston cup pictures , we saved them from the fire and cleaned them up. Can’t wait till our home track is back again. Thank you for all the information.
Adults, running in circles while burning fossil fuels - Ah, the American dream!
Agreed, spectators driving to track & field events burns far more fossil fuels than a NASCAR race ever could. Elon is fixing that.
This is one of the best things to happen in racing in years. I've been a fan for 60 years.
FAN - tastic !

I would really like to go to this historic track. Hopefully I can take my Family
Wow. 26 years. I was at that last race. Great to hear it's coming back and keeping it's old NC grit and charm.
