Back in the early 2000’s, smaller units from Bragg used to do helicopter static line and MMF jumps on Laurinburg. Lots of old DC 10s out there next to the cotton. Probably half my jumps stationed at Bragg were there.
I'm from Maxton. I remember taking field trips to the airbase with our shop teacher, Mr. Phillip Essey. He used his class as an excuse to fly his plane he had stored there. This was back in the day when you could leave kids unchaperoned, standing around watching him fly complete flips and nose dives.. I also liked in the military barracks they turned into Skyway Terrace apartments. I teach about the airbase every time I teach WWII. So many people never knew our small town's connection!

Really interesting piece! I used to think I knew a good bit about NC till I subscribed to NCRH. Good stuff.
