Hey, did you know that teachers used to wheel a TV on cart into classrooms every March so kids could watch basketball? Have you shared that fact online? Well then go ahead and share this story too.
Holy crap nobody tell these joy-killers about transistor radios or they'll come for those memories too.
The tourney (and the league itself) leaves Greensboro and the ACC expands to California and dook offers degrees in tripping (not the fun kind) and now you're tuning out our boring old stories.
Now excuse me I'm off to play Sail With The Pilot on YouTube and yell at those kids on my lawn.
You keep me smiling! I’ll always remember Billy Packer and Jim Thacker calling close ACC Tournament games “BARN BURNERS”! I think I will Sail with the Pilot as well!
So. If you spent the entire first segment of your podcast this week on this, including running various video and audio clips, have you officially jumped the shark? Then I stand guilty as charged!
I get that it became a total cliche, but with the ACC (and ACC tournament) undergoing so much change, I think a little nostalgia for the old ACC tournament is ok. I'm a Maryland fan who grew up in Greensboro with lots of fond memories of my school battling the Tobacco Road powers, and now we play in a completely different conference! So the TV cart cliche doesn't bother me.
It was a special occasion etched in a lobe of my brain forever, I was lucky enough to experience this for many years in my Randolph county school, and Duke was a thing in the 70’s, I remember me wearing my Carolina Tar Heels rain jacket all day long. There were some girls that came up with a saying that turned into a fad for a few years:
It went exactly like this: Duke is puke Wake is fake but the team I hate is NC State.
I can picture them now over 50y ago reciting it together. (They were very smart and came up with fraises consistently)
It so happens every ACC tournament that’s saying wakes up that corner of my brain to acknowledge the peaceful times in life where good friends gathered around the 20” tv screen to laugh and smile like it should always be, it’s a warm feeling that provides happiness immediately.
It was usually Wolfpack vs Tarheel fans and in 2024 we get lucky to see them play each other for the ACC CHAMPIONSHIP.
You have a knack for writing. I recently subscribed after finding your article about the "NC State fighting stickers" while surfing the web, and am enjoying thus far! Keep it up :)
I was the class A/V nerd. Apparently my tenure pre-dated the rules against kids humping A/V carts down the hall. Remember "opaque projectors?" Yeah, no one else does either...

Our cart was in Civics class but I don't like to think about it, it makes me sad now. That mouse did bad things to us, he took good things from us.

the prosecution rests
We (teachers !) snuck transistor radios into class when I was student teaching at Pisgah High in 1973.
Go Catamounts!

Yes, we occasionally watched basketball - but the big thing I remember the cart coming out for was the OJ verdict.
WE'RE GONNA NEED A POST HAVING SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE HISTORY OF WOLFPACK BASKETBALL, WHOOOOH, ACC CHAMPIONS BABY! LET'S GOOOOO!
