A podcast about what I found in hard to find places
It started with a few questions: Where were North Carolina’s most remote places? What would I learn by going to them? And what would happen if I brought a nice microphone with me?
The result was “Away Message”, a podcast that ran for four seasons and 40 episodes. It ran from 2017 through 2020, and was produced during my time as a writer and editor at Our State magazine. I was privileged to have a job where I got to travel around the entire state, which included a lot of places that were way off the beaten path.
Each season evolved. At first, it was about travel. Then it became about overlooked facts, forgotten history, unusual ideas, and interesting people. The final season, an 8-episode journey down the Mountains-to-Sea trail, was the best project I’ve ever worked on.
Full credit goes to Our State magazine for making this a reality, and to Andy Busam and James Mieczkowski for being my fantastic producing partners. It’s safe to say that the North Carolina Rabbit Hole doesn’t exist without Away Message. The ability to roam is a magical thing.
