I want to say it was in the 70’s, late 80’s at most, there was a platform on the west end of the mountain that people would hang glide from. There was some sort of hang gliding club that used it. I think it was all shut down after there were some accidents. Kinda dangerous.
When I was about 11 or 12 I hiked to the top with my dad on the lower altitude eastern half of the mountain with a shovel and pick axe. If you dug down into the dirt at the top you could find some really nice quartz crystals, and we did!
Yes, never, ever go on land that has locked gates and no trespassing signs!
While on state authorized land and gates were open, I was chased down by trucks with red laser rifles pointed on me from behind. Can we say I explained my presence and then left without river samples. The state then put an end to this collection site!
Outside Kinston on right going toward Greenville. The only place to monitor river past what is/was DuPont. Was an old fish camp but sold and turned into a privately owned nature preserve. We were authorized by the state, but the owners would change locks to deny access. They meant business!
Did you know there's an airplane crash on the north side of Hanging Rock mountain? Haven't been there yet/tried to find it. Some people have hiked there but nobody to my knowledge has posted GPS coordinates because they prefer most people try not to get there.

You're right: I came across that tidbit in an old newspaper article but I didn't get around to including it.

What is it called when you're legally not supposed to go somewhere but you really want to go anyway? Asking for a friend.
It's called trespassing, unfortunately!
I love this. The first time I went to Mount Mitchell, I was slightly disappointed because you couldn't see a darn thing because of the clouds.
At least Mount Mitchell has, like, an observation tower, and a snack bar, and all sorts of trails!

Lesson learned and hard NO for the future!
Where was this?

Yeah, I saw some Reddit folks that have been there but aren't saying how they found it. Reminds me of the Blue Ridge Parkway crash that people would tromp to. The NPS finally removed the wreckage because they were tired of dealing with it: https://www.nps.gov/blri/learn/news/remaining-1983-plane-wreckage-near-waterrock-knob-removed.htm
