Sebastian Cothran is a UNC-Asheville senior who's been entrusted by the people of Haywood County to handle $40 million in tax revenue. How did he win? Depends on who you ask.
This really is a great story, and as Sarah commented below, Cothran's sincerity is palpable. I like him, and I like his commitment to ensuring citizens get the tax breaks they deserve. I hope he finds the work fulfilling. Thanks for introducing him to a wider audience.
What a great story!! This young man sounds earnest and sincere. He sounds like an authentic public servant, one who believes in working hard and being qualified. Too bad he's a Republican, but perhaps he'll lead the way in creating a movement within the Republican party that is anti-Trump, anti-Cawthorn, anti-hate , anti-ignorance and incompetence -- and pro-people, pro-citizen. He believes in the power of government to do good for people. I'm happy to hear him say he wants to make senior citizens aware of their possible tax exemptions. Thanks for the terrific story. - Rah (Sarah) Bickley, Durham
This is absolutely wild. I respect any young person getting involved in local politics, even though I am positive Cothran and I would disagree on 98% of policy decisions. It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on this over the next few years. Who knows, maybe before too long we’re hearing about the former 21-year-old tax collector leading a committee in the NCGA. (Again, I hope not because I doubt I agree with his politics haha)
Is there any way we can export his attitude to ALL OTHER politicians in the US? Running because you care about the job, qualified to do the job, and wanting to help people and not go after the other party. Refreshing.

This is a smart kid who is going to do better than fine. We need more young folks involved.
