There is a section of the Palmetto Trail (ya, I know...) that switches back and forth on the state line. There are not only the yellow markers on the trees, but the orange posts with the navigation disc on the top. These are on both sides of the trail within the first mile. Access it at the end of Bell Mountain Road (go to the right) in Zirconia/Tuxedo. It's a nice hike through the Greenville Watershed.
If there is a real and proven benefit for therapy animals used in mental issues, prisoners, children hospitals and other locations I have not seen it. People feel good about the animals and they enjoy the visit, maybe reduced BP, etc. but long term improvement, no. Compared to control group, no. Recidivism differential, no. Good exercise, positive feelings all around.
LIVING with an animal by choice is a different calculation.
There are volumes of research that discuss long term benefits of therapy with horses, even with veterans who suffer from PTSDi have seen lots of positive long term benefits to all types of people over 11 years of making visits with my mini therapy horse.
