The O.G. Declaration of Independence was signed in Charlotte on May 20, 1775. Did it really exist? Probably? Here are a few stories about America's most underrated founding document.
Not to add more confusion to the significance of May 20, but May 20, 1861 was the date NC seceded from the Union. Of course, this has nothing to do with the Mecklenburg Declaration but it is somewhat ironic....same date of the month but different "declarations."
For the 200th anniversary the county erected a replica of the 1775 courthouse next to the then-current courthouse. It remained for the bi-centennial year celebration of the US. I remember seeing it on 3rd street.
I was in Freedom Park for the Gerald Ford visit and speech with some students on field trip and MayDay Hornet Tribe, the counter culture, political and general good-trouble making group distributed pamphlets with a drawing of then VP Nelson Rockefeller eating African children. I took one and gave it to one of my students to have as a souvenir
