Some old lyrics from a legendary band mention a strange place in this state. Tracking down the story behind it was easy. Tracking down the actual location is, uh, something you can help with?
You may recall the 1972 political climate and a Republican being elected Governor of North Carolina. The people of Surry County believed at the time, and some still.do, that Aliens from another Planet, many thought Pluto, had arrived to manipulate the election to favor Republicans and end the Democrat Party hold on the political system. They landed north of Winston-Salem and found Jim Holshouser who they elected Governor of North Carolina. And things have been good ever since!
I'd heard that theory too, and I'm guessing that Bob Welch may not have been North Carolina savvy enough to know the difference between Winston-Salem and Wilmington.
I grew up and still live in NC. The song Hypnotized by Bob Welch is referring the Devils Tramping Ground as I was told by locals in the 70's. It is near Siler City. A 40 ft diameter indention (shaped like a pond) where nothing will grow. Went there with buds in mid 70's to check it out and probably had a buzz! Explains why you never found a "pond" with water.
There is a quarry that was heavily forested and operated about that timeline. It’s nowhere near as surrounded by trees as it used to be but I wouldn’t rule it out.

I heard back in the 70s it was referring to Carolina Bays. The ponds caused by meteors in the eastern part of the state.

Ask Chocolate Myers. His neck of the woods.
Jeremy,

Love the article and loved the song for years. Thank you!
